Megan Franklin Named UNI Director of Athletics

In a major announcement, University of Northern Iowa President Mark Nook revealed that Megan Franklin has been appointed as UNI’s Director of Athletics. Franklin, a Lincoln, Neb., native, brings over a decade of experience as Senior Associate Athletics Director at Drake University, where she also served as the Interim Athletics Director in 2017.

Starting her new role on May 13, Franklin is set to lead UNI’s athletic department with a vision for success and growth. She has agreed to a five-year contract pending approval by the Iowa Board of Regents. With a background in NCAA Division I Athletics administration, Franklin has previously worked at FBS programs like Virginia Tech and Nebraska before joining Drake in 2012.

During her time at Drake, Franklin played a pivotal role in the resurgence of the university’s athletics program. She worked closely with community leaders to bring NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games to Des Moines and was instrumental in the development of the Mediacom Stadium, a facility that has become a hub for sports and events in the area.

President Nook expressed his excitement about Franklin’s appointment, highlighting her commitment to student-athlete success and her strategic vision for UNI Athletics. Franklin, in turn, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Panthers, citing the university’s rich tradition of success and community engagement as key factors in her decision.

With a track record of successful coaching hires and program development, Franklin’s arrival at UNI signals a new chapter for Panther Athletics. Her experience and leadership are expected to elevate the program to new heights, drawing on her expertise in building winning teams and fostering a culture of excellence. Panther fans and alumni can look forward to a bright future under Franklin’s guidance.
