Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a thrilling Section VI Class B final at Grand Island High School on Saturday, the Fredonia baseball team fell just short of victory against the No. 1 ranked Medina Mustangs. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Fredonia taking the lead in the top of the sixth inning, only to have Medina respond with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 4-3 win.

Despite the loss, Fredonia head coach Tim Cowan expressed immense pride in his team’s performance. He commended the players for their resilience and determination, especially after enduring a three-hour weather delay during the game.

The game was filled with intense moments, including a standout defensive play by Fredonia’s Colin Luce in the third inning that prevented a run from scoring. However, the Mustangs ultimately capitalized on their opportunities and secured the victory.

Fredonia’s season may have ended with a runner-up finish, but the team’s future looks bright. With only two seniors on the roster, the ‘Billies have a strong foundation to build upon for next season. Cowan highlighted the contributions of seniors Nate Sercu and Owen Rush, praising their leadership and impact on the team.

As for the Mustangs, the win marked their fourth sectional title in five seasons and sixth overall. They now advance to face the Section V Class B champion in the next round of the playoffs.

Despite the disappointment of the loss, Cowan remains optimistic about the team’s future, emphasizing their determination to come back stronger next season. With a talented core of players returning, Fredonia is poised to make another run at the championship.
