Violence Escalates in New Caledonia as Sixth Person Dies in Clashes

French security forces reported another death on Saturday in armed clashes in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, marking the sixth fatality in a week of violent unrest. The archipelago, whose indigenous population has long sought independence, has been engulfed in chaos and destruction.

The latest fatality occurred during an exchange of fire at one of the many impromptu barricades blocking roads on the island. Two others were seriously injured in the clash, which took place at a blockade in the north of the main island, at Kaala-Gomen.

The violence erupted following protests over voting reforms opposed by pro-independence supporters who have been pushing to break free from France. The clashes, looting, arson, and mayhem have turned parts of the capital, Noumea, into no-go zones, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Despite a state of emergency imposed by the government in Paris and reinforcements for security services, residents say violence continues to make venturing out perilous. Noumea’s mayor, Sonia Lagarde, described the situation as “under siege,” with the damage being described as “incredible.”

The unrest comes as the French legislature in Paris debates amending the constitution to make changes to voter lists in New Caledonia. The measures have sparked further tensions between Indigenous Kanaks seeking independence and descendants of colonizers who want to remain part of France.

The state of emergency gives authorities greater powers to tackle violent protesters, with the possibility of house detention for those deemed a threat to public order. The situation remains volatile, with no immediate signs of calm returning to the troubled archipelago.
