With the European Parliament elections just around the corner, the French Socialist Party and left-wing Place Publique have unveiled an ambitious manifesto aimed at reshaping the European Union. Headed by Raphaël Glucksmann, the program consists of 338 proposals focused on creating a more “sovereign” and “ecological” EU.
One of the key pillars of Glucksmann’s campaign is the idea of a “sovereign and powerful Europe”, a concept that resonates with other political parties such as les Républicains and President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party. However, Glucksmann emphasizes that his program stands out from the rest.
The manifesto includes plans to bolster the European defense industry by increasing support for Ukraine in the face of Russian imperialism. Glucksmann proposes seizing frozen Russian assets worth €206 billion to aid the Ukrainian resistance and accelerate Kyiv’s accession to the EU. Additionally, he advocates for a €100 billion fund to strengthen the EU’s defense capabilities.
In order to create a level playing field within the EU, Glucksmann aims to address wage disparities between member states by establishing a minimum income across the bloc. He also proposes a “Buy European” law to reduce dependence on non-EU exports, particularly in agriculture.
To fund these initiatives, Glucksmann suggests taxing high earners and corporations, as well as imposing a kerosene tax on aviation. He also plans to reform the Common Agricultural Policy to prioritize employment and environmental benefits.
Despite trailing behind Macron’s Renaissance party and the far-right National Rally party in the polls, Glucksmann’s campaign is gaining momentum with a 14.5% approval rating. As the election draws near, the battle for the future of the EU intensifies.
