Westfield Softball Team Faces Challenge of Filling Void Left by Departed Division I Talent

As the spring softball season kicks off, the Westfield Wolverines are facing a major challenge in filling the void left by the departure of Division I talent Haleigh Dellow. Dellow, a three-time Post-Journal/OBSERVER Player of the Year, graduated and is now playing NCAA Division I softball at George Mason University.

Dellow’s impressive stats from her senior season with Westfield include an 18-2 record with eight shutouts and three no-hitters. She boasted a 0.65 earned run average and struck out 213 batters while holding opponents to a .109 batting average. Not only was Dellow dominant in the circle, but she also excelled at the plate, hitting .547 with 14 doubles, a triple, and six home runs.

Westfield head coach Shawn Gnadzinski expressed the impact of Dellow’s leadership on the team, stating, “Definitely missing her leadership just walking in the gym… We’ve lost that. I think that’s what we’ll miss the most.”

With eight returning starters, including standout players like junior catcher Sydney Hotchkiss and pitchers Eva Gnadzinski and Mackenzie Schumaker, the Wolverines have a strong foundation to build upon. Gnadzinski highlighted the importance of replicating Dellow’s leadership and emphasized the readiness of Gnadzinski and Schumaker to step up in the circle.

The Wolverines are gearing up for their season opener against the reigning Class C state champion Gowanda Panthers, setting the stage for an exciting and challenging start to their campaign. Despite the departure of Dellow, Westfield is poised to showcase their talent and determination as they aim to continue their success on the softball diamond.
