FRESHFARM Assumes Control of Ward 8 Southeast Farmers Market

Reading Time: < 1 minute

FRESHFARM, a prominent operator of farmers markets in the D.C. region, is expanding its reach by assuming operations of the Ward 8 farmers market at THEARC campus in Southeast D.C. The market, located at 1901 Mississippi Avenue, will be open every Saturday from June 1 to Nov. 30.

Partnering with nonprofit Building Bridges Across the River, FRESHFARM aims to make fresh produce more accessible to low-income families. They will offer reduced rates on veggie subscriptions for customers using SNAP/EBT benefits, a dollar-for-dollar match up to $30 a day for SNAP, Senior, and WIC shoppers, and the Produce Plus program for residents in need.

THEARC campus, which houses the farmers market, is a 16.5-acre facility that also includes headquarters for various nonprofits focused on education, health, culture, and social services. With the addition of the Ward 8 market, FRESHFARM will now manage six farmers markets in Wards 7 and 8 for the 2024 season.

Last year, FRESHFARM took over operations of the Cleveland Park Farmers Market in Northwest D.C., further solidifying its position as the largest network of farmers markets in the mid-Atlantic and the third-largest in the country. In 2023, the organization generated $28.5 million in revenue for farmers and producers and attracted over 1 million customers to its markets.

This move not only benefits the local community by providing access to fresh, healthy food but also supports local farmers and producers. FRESHFARM’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement continues to make a positive impact in the D.C. area.
