At 40 years old, Indian archer Tarundeep Rai has proven that age is just a number as he clinched a historic World Cup gold in Shanghai on Sunday. Rai’s journey to this victory was not without its challenges, as he revealed that being excluded from the Asian Games team last year left him “boiling with anger.”
Despite his disappointment, Rai used this setback as motivation to give archery “one last shot.” His determination paid off as he, along with teammates Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav, defeated reigning Olympic champions South Korea to secure India’s first World Cup gold in 14 years.
Rai’s exclusion from the Asian Games team forced him to make drastic lifestyle changes, including adopting a strict diet and dedicating more time to fitness training. His hard work and perseverance paid off as he shed 12kg and made a remarkable comeback, winning silver at the Baghdad Asia Cup and earning a spot in the World Cup and Olympic teams.
The victory over Korea in the World Cup final not only marked a significant milestone for the Indian team but also boosted their chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics. Rai’s experience and leadership were crucial in guiding his younger teammates to success, showcasing the importance of mental strength and teamwork in archery.
Looking ahead, Rai remains focused on maintaining their momentum and aiming for success at the Paris Olympics. With a renewed sense of energy and determination, Rai and his team are ready to take on whatever challenges come their way in pursuit of their Olympic dreams.
