Jonathan Tetelman’s journey from nightclub DJ to international opera star is nothing short of operatic itself. The 35-year-old transformed his career from spinning tracks at New York clubs to gracing prestigious stages like London’s Royal Opera House and the Salzburg Festival.
After taking a break from singing in 2011, Tetelman made a bold decision to sell all his DJ equipment and focus on his true passion for opera. Transitioning from baritone to tenor, he found success and will be featured in a Metropolitan Opera performance of Puccini’s “La Rondine” alongside soprano Angel Blue.
Born in Chile and raised in New Jersey, Tetelman pursued a degree in music and initially struggled with his vocal range. However, with determination and guidance from vocal coaches, he honed his tenor technique and landed roles in productions like “La Bohème” and “Madama Butterfly.”
Tetelman’s talent and charisma have not gone unnoticed, with conductor Speranza Scappucci praising his solid top notes and tenderness in intimate moments. His Met debut was met with enthusiasm from audiences, and he continues to captivate listeners with his performances.
Looking ahead, Tetelman has his sights set on a variety of roles beyond Puccini, showcasing his versatility and ambition in the opera world. As he continues to rise in prominence, his journey from the DJ booth to the opera stage serves as an inspiring example of following one’s true calling.
