Fuel shortage causing disruptions to business operations in Nigeria – Abuja Chamber of Commerce

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has raised concerns about the ongoing fuel shortages in Nigeria, stating that it is obstructing business operations in the country. ACCI President, Emeka Obegolu, emphasized the negative impact of the shortages on transportation costs and logistics, with some individuals taking advantage of the situation to hike fuel prices in various regions.

Obegolu called on the Federal Government to address the root causes of the problem as a matter of priority, highlighting the frustration faced by businesses and individuals in conducting transactions due to the increased costs. He expressed hope that the soon-to-be-operational Dangote refinery and other new refineries would make Nigeria self-reliant and less dependent on imported fuel, ultimately putting an end to the current challenges.

The head of the Organised Private Sector in the Federal Capital Territory urged the Nigeria National Petroleum Commission Limited (NNPCL) to expedite the distribution of petroleum products across the country to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerians. Obegolu reiterated ACCI’s commitment to advocating for policies and interventions that support the growth and development of businesses in the region.

Despite assurances from NNPCL that fuel scarcity would be resolved, long queues and high prices persist at petrol stations in Lagos, Ogun State, Abuja, and other parts of the country. Nairametrics observed fuel stations selling petrol for as high as N850 to N900 per liter in Lagos, while black marketers in Abuja are selling fuel for as much as N1,500 per liter to wearied motorists. The situation continues to worsen, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to the fuel shortages in Nigeria.
