H.E. President Adama Barrow of The Gambia has taken a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the Rohingya community by approving the filing of a Reply Brief to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Today, on the 23rd of May 2024, The Gambia submitted its Reply Brief, responding to Myanmar’s denial of committing genocide against the Rohingya.
The Reply emphasized the substantial evidence confirming Myanmar’s responsibility for genocide against the Rohingya. The Gambia’s filing comes at a critical time as reports indicate a worsening situation in Rakhine State, with renewed violence and displacement of civilians, including Rohingya members.
The Gambia expressed deep concern over the reports of violence and forced conscription of Rohingya civilians by the Myanmar military. They called on all parties to protect civilians, provide humanitarian assistance, and uphold international human rights and humanitarian law.
The Gambia’s commitment to seeking justice and accountability for the Rohingya was highlighted, with appreciation for the support from fellow Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. As the case progresses at the ICJ, The Gambia remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure that those responsible for the atrocities against the Rohingya are held accountable.
