In the recently concluded IPL 2024 season, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc had a rollercoaster journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Bought for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore, Starc faced immense pressure to deliver for his team. Despite a shaky start, Starc rose to the occasion in the crucial Qualifier 1 and the final, playing a pivotal role in KKR’s third IPL title win.
However, along with the highs came the lows, as Starc faced criticism from various quarters. In a chat show on Sportskeeda, former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram referred to critics as ‘girgit’ (chameleons) for their changing opinions. KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir, however, had a different perspective on the matter.
Gambhir emphasized that it is the job of experts to critique players based on their performances. He stressed the importance of not letting external opinions affect a player’s mindset, and instead focusing on the support and feedback from teammates.
“It is the job of the experts and there is nothing to feel bad about. What the people say in your dressing room think about you is important,” Gambhir stated during the interview. He further added that players should not be swayed by external criticism, as it is a part of the game.
Gambhir’s insightful comments shed light on the mental resilience required in professional sports, where external opinions can often be harsh and fluctuating. As Starc proved with his performances, staying focused on one’s game and the support of teammates can lead to ultimate success on the field.
