Gaza conflict forces parents to be separated from their newborn baby

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The heart-wrenching story of baby Yehia Hamuda, born prematurely amidst the chaos of war in Gaza, has captured the attention of people around the world. The separation of this innocent child from his parents, Sondos and Zakaria, highlights the devastating impact of conflict on families in the region.

Yehia’s journey began on November 27, two months premature, as violence erupted in Gaza. Israeli forces raided the hospital where he was receiving care in the north, forcing his evacuation to southern Gaza. Since then, his parents have been unable to see him, trapped in the north by military checkpoints and the constant threat of danger.

Sondos and Zakaria, living in Jabalia, have been left to scroll through photos of their five-month-old son on a mobile phone, longing for the day they can hold him in their arms. The 30-km journey to Rafah, where Yehia is being cared for, is too perilous for them to undertake, with tanks and bulldozers blocking their path.

The uncertainty and fear that Yehia’s parents face are palpable. Sondos expresses her concern that her son may end up living alone, separated from his family in the midst of a conflict that has already claimed thousands of lives in Gaza. The emotional toll of not being able to be with her child is evident in her words, as she describes the pain in her chest from not being able to breastfeed him.

Meanwhile, in Rafah, Yehia is being looked after by the dedicated nurses and medical staff at the al-Emirati hospital. Despite the challenges he faced upon arrival from the north, his health has improved under their care. Nurse Amal Abu Khatla describes Yehia as “the son of the neonatal unit,” with everyone at the hospital showering him with love and attention.

For Zakaria, the longing to hold his son is overwhelming. His only wish is for God to reunite them as a family, to be able to embrace Yehia and watch him grow. The uncertainty of not knowing when or if they will be able to be together again weighs heavily on him, as he waits for the day when they can finally be reunited.

The story of baby Yehia Hamuda serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict in Gaza. It highlights the struggles faced by families torn apart by war, and the resilience and love that binds them together in the face of adversity. As the world watches and waits for a resolution to the conflict, the hope for a brighter future for Yehia and his family remains steadfast.
