Columbia University Students Channel Spirit of 1968 Protests in Solidarity with Gaza
In a powerful display of solidarity and activism, Columbia University students have set up a protest camp on campus lawns, drawing comparisons to the mass protests of 1968. The students, who are demonstrating in support of Gaza, have taken inspiration from the tactics and strategies of the ‘68 protesters, studying their methods before launching their own movement.
The protest camp at Columbia has become a focal point for student activism, with organizers inviting participants of the historic protests to speak and sharing knowledge on security and communication strategies. The students are calling for the university to cut ties with Israeli academic institutions and divest from Israel-linked companies.
While the protests of today may seem tame compared to the unrest of the ‘60s, the students are hyper-focused and strategic in their approach. They have undergone de-escalation and media training, and even have a designated “nut zone” to protect students with allergies.
The current wave of student protests over the war in Gaza has spread to campuses across the country, leading to a violent crackdown by police and the arrest of hundreds of students. The stage is set for a showdown at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, echoing the protests of ‘68.
As the summer of protest looms, the students at Columbia are determined to make their voices heard and push for change. They understand the importance of their activism in this election year and are committed to fighting for a better future.
