The Georgetown Historical Society is gearing up for an exciting new exhibit that will celebrate local athletes who have achieved great success in their respective sports. Titled “Sussex Sports Legends,” the exhibit will shine a spotlight on athletes from Sussex County who have made it to the professional level or have been part of championship-winning teams.
Among the athletes to be featured in the exhibit are Costen Shockley, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Angels, as well as Chris Short, Johnny Morris, Delino DeShields, and Luke Petitgout, all of whom have had successful careers in professional sports.
In addition to honoring individual athletes, the exhibit will also highlight Sussex County teams that have won state or world championships, such as the 1981 Georgetown Senior League World Series baseball team and Sussex Central High School’s 1989 state championship baseball team.
The goal of the exhibit is to inspire local youth by showcasing the achievements of athletes from small towns who have reached the pinnacle of their sports. The Georgetown Historical Society hopes that the exhibit will attract a new audience to the museum and bring the community together through a shared love of sports.
Members of the society are currently working to raise funds for the exhibit, with plans to include motor sports to recognize local racing legends like Eddie Pettyjohn. Overall, the exhibit aims to celebrate the unique sporting history of Sussex County and provide a new and engaging experience for museum visitors.
