The popular home-based business, Go with the Wind, has been permanently closed by the York Region Public Health Unit after numerous reports of severe food-borne illnesses. At least 11 people have fallen ill after consuming food from the establishment located in Georgina.

Public health inspectors took action on May 24 after receiving complaints of illness from individuals who had dined at Go with the Wind. According to Dorianna Simone, manager of health protection at York Region Public Health, two groups of individuals experienced food-borne illness after eating at the establishment on May 19 and May 20, 2024.

The affected individuals reported a range of symptoms including vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and fatigue. An investigation is currently underway, with health inspectors working to identify all potential sources of illness and mitigate any health hazards.

The public health inspection report revealed several non-compliance issues at Go with the Wind, including a lack of potable water supply, failure to obtain food from an inspected source, and improper food contact surfaces and equipment for cleaning and sanitizing. The operator also failed to notify York Region Public Health of their intention to operate, leading to the immediate closure of the establishment.

Samples of food and water were extracted for further testing, and the business owner was issued a verbal order to shut down. The investigation is ongoing to ensure the safety of the public and prevent any further cases of food-borne illness.
