German surfer Sebastian Steudtner breaks world record by conquering ‘unrideable’ 93.7ft wave in Portugal

German surfer Sebastian Steudtner, 38, has claimed to have surfed a monster wave at the famous spot Nazaré in Portugal, reaching a staggering height of 93.7ft. Steudtner, who currently holds the Guinness World Record for a wave he surfed in 2020 at 86ft, used innovative drone technology for his latest record attempt.

Known as ‘Mission Wave Alpha,’ Steudtner trained for years to find the perfect wave, finally deciding to take on the massive waves of Nazaré in February. The conditions were described as ‘historic,’ with waves reaching the height of a ten-storey building due to an underwater canyon off the coast that is three miles deep.

Despite the dangers involved in big wave surfing, Steudtner fearlessly carved down the massive foaming waves, being towed into them by a jet-ski. The official confirmation of his new world record lies with the World Surf League, with Porsche Engineering supporting the project by developing state-of-the-art drones to measure the waves.

Steudtner’s ultimate goal is to surf waves exceeding the mythical mark of 100ft, a feat that he believes is achievable. His fearless feat follows a new women’s big wave world record set by Australian Laura Enever last year. Enever paddled into a monster 43.6ft wave at the notorious Himalayas break on Hawaii’s north shore, showcasing the growing achievements in the world of big wave surfing.
