Germany confronts troop shortage as NATO-Russia tensions escalate – Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

As tensions rise between NATO countries and Russia, Germany finds itself facing a shortage of troops to fulfill its commitments to the alliance. According to a report by Reuters, Germany will need at least 75,000 additional troops to meet its NATO obligations.

The Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, currently has around 180,000 soldiers, falling short of the target of 200,000 troops. This shortage comes at a critical time as NATO countries are preparing to defend themselves against potential aggression from Russia.

Diplomats have warned that the increasing involvement of the USA and other NATO countries in supporting Ukraine against Russia could lead to a possible attack on NATO countries. In response, NATO leaders approved new defence plans at the Vilnius summit last year, outlining the alliance’s strategy in the event of a Russian attack.

Meanwhile, Russia has been ramping up its military drills, including nuclear exercises, to defend its territory against NATO. Russian vessels, including a nuclear-powered submarine, are set to arrive in Havana next week, according to Cuban officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning to the West, stating that Russia will use all available means to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Putin emphasized that Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows for the use of all means if its security is threatened.

As the threat of conflict looms, NATO countries are on high alert, with Germany facing the challenge of bolstering its military capabilities to meet the demands of the alliance.
