Ghana and Italy support EU-ECOWAS cooperation for regional stability

Italian President Sergio Mattarella’s visit to Ghana has sparked discussions on the need for enhanced cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address economic, security, and political challenges in the sub-region.

During a joint press conference with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collective efforts in tackling issues such as piracy, terrorism, violent extremism, illicit drug and human trafficking. He highlighted the need for global leaders to work towards reforms in the United Nations Security Council to better represent the interests of developing countries.

President Mattarella echoed the sentiment of cooperation between Europe and Africa, emphasizing the shared vision of advancing humanity’s cause. He expressed the EU’s commitment to collaborating with ECOWAS to address challenges such as piracy, illicit drug trafficking, irregular migration, and terrorism.

The Italian President also raised concerns about the decline of democratic principles in sub-Saharan Africa and commended Ghana for its efforts in promoting democratic governance and the rule of law. He urged ECOWAS leaders to prioritize regional cooperation to address the growing incidence of coups in the sub-region.

As part of his visit, President Mattarella will tour significant historical sites in Ghana, including the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Christiansborg Castle. The visit aims to strengthen the bond of friendship between Italy and Ghana and explore new areas of mutual interest for sustainable development and growth.
