Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is currently in a “life-threatening condition” after being shot multiple times in an assassination attempt in the central town of Handlova. The 59-year-old leader was shot in the abdomen, and a suspect has been detained by the police.

World leaders have come forward to condemn the attack and express their support for Fico and the people of Slovakia. United States President Joe Biden called the shooting a “horrific act of violence” and said he and First Lady Jill Biden are praying for Fico’s swift recovery.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attack as a “monstrous crime” and expressed hope for Fico’s survival. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres decried the “shocking attack” and expressed his thoughts for the prime minister and his loved ones.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that violence has no place in society. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, and other world leaders also expressed their shock and solidarity with Fico.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan all condemned the attack and wished Fico a speedy recovery.

The global outpouring of support for Prime Minister Fico underscores the unity of world leaders in denouncing violence and standing in solidarity with Slovakia during this difficult time.
