The Westfield softball team is facing a major challenge this season as they work to fill the void left by the departure of Division I talent Haleigh Dellow. Dellow, a three-time OBSERVER/Post-Journal Player of the Year, graduated and is now playing NCAA Division I softball at George Mason University. Her absence leaves a significant gap in the team, both on the field and in terms of leadership.

In her senior season with Westfield, Dellow showcased her exceptional skills both as a pitcher and a batter. She recorded an impressive 0.65 earned run average and struck out 213 batters while also hitting .547 with 14 doubles, a triple, and six home runs. Her departure not only impacts the team’s performance but also leaves a leadership vacuum that will be hard to fill.

Despite the loss of Dellow, Westfield is not lacking in talent. With eight returning starters and four seniors to lead the team, there is hope for a successful season. Two pitchers, Eva Gnadzinski and Mackenzie Schumaker, are eager to step up and fill the void left by Dellow in the circle. Both pitchers have shown promise in previous seasons and are ready for the challenge ahead.

The Wolverines are gearing up for their season opener against the reigning Class C state champion Gowanda Panthers, where they will face a tough test right from the start. Coach Shawn Gnadzinski is confident in his team’s abilities and is looking forward to seeing how they perform against top competition. With a strong lineup and experienced players, Westfield is poised to make a statement this season despite the loss of their star player.
