Gold Medalist Honored for Saving Teens

Former Olympic gold medalist Steven Bradbury has once again proven himself to be a hero, this time off the ice and in the waters of Australia. Last March, Bradbury was at a beach in Caloundra with his son Flyn when he spotted a girl struggling in the rough surf. Without hesitation, Bradbury grabbed his son’s surfboard and paddled out to rescue the young woman.

To his surprise, Bradbury discovered three more teenagers in distress further out in the water. Battling waves over six feet high, Bradbury managed to bring the first girl to safety before returning for the others. Despite one of the girls hyperventilating, Bradbury remained calm and focused, successfully rescuing all four teenagers.

For his courageous actions, Bradbury has been awarded a bravery award by Australian governor General David Hurley. This is not the first time Bradbury has been hailed a hero – in 2002, he became known as the “accidental hero” after winning Australia’s first Winter Olympics gold medal in short track speed skating.

Australian Olympic Committee President Ian Chesterman praised Bradbury for his incredible achievement in saving four young lives, stating, “We have always admired Steven for the way he has made history on the ice, but his actions last year reflect an incredible achievement.”

Despite the accolades, Bradbury remains humble, stating, “I don’t feel like a bravery award is necessary . . . . The feeling of knowing that you have saved people’s lives is something I will take to my grave.” Bradbury’s selfless act serves as a reminder of the true meaning of heroism and the impact one person can have in a moment of crisis.
