World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler found himself in hot water on his way to the PGA Championship as he was arrested and charged with multiple offenses. The Masters champion was reportedly trying to navigate through a traffic jam caused by a fatal traffic incident when he ran into trouble.
According to court records, Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. The golfer was arrested while wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt, but later appeared in an orange jail shirt for his mugshot before returning to Valhalla Golf Club in his golf attire just in time for his tee-off.
In a statement, Scheffler explained, “It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”
The incident occurred as traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the road leading to Valhalla. A pedestrian had been struck by a bus in a lane dedicated to tournament traffic and was pronounced dead at the scene. The PGA of America identified the victim as an employee of one of its vendors.
Scheffler reportedly drove past a police officer in a vehicle marked as a PGA Championship vehicle, leading to a confrontation that resulted in his arrest. His lawyer maintained that Scheffler was following directions and did not intentionally break any laws.
Despite the incident, Scheffler managed to focus on his game and put on a strong performance at the tournament. With a recent string of victories under his belt, including his second Masters title, Scheffler is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of golf.
