Google clarifies job cuts at Flutter, Dart, and Python teams

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Google has made significant job cuts in teams working on various technologies, including Flutter, Dart, and Python. The layoffs were confirmed by the search giant to Tech Crunch, with spokesperson Alex Garcia-Kummert stating that it is part of organisational restructuring efforts.

While the company clarified that the layoffs were not company-wide, reports from impacted employees on social media platforms suggest that multiple teams were affected. A project manager from the Flutter and Dart teams mentioned that “a LOT of teams” were impacted, with “lots of great projects lost people.” However, Google stated that Flutter and Dart were not disproportionately affected compared to other teams.

The Python team, responsible for managing internal Python runtimes, toolchains, and open-source Python contributions, also faced layoffs. According to Python Steering Council member Thomas Wouters, roles within the team were “reduced” in favor of a new team based in Munich, Germany.

Google has assured impacted employees that they will have the opportunity to apply for other open roles within the company. The company is committed to providing support, including outplacement services and severance packages, in accordance with local requirements.

Overall, Google’s restructuring efforts aim to streamline operations, remove layers, and align resources with the company’s biggest product priorities. The company is focused on fostering innovation and reducing bureaucracy to drive forward its most important advances.
