Google has made headlines once again with reports of layoffs within the company. According to a recent article by Free Press Journal, the tech giant has let go of its entire Python team in a move to cut costs by hiring cheaper labor outside the United States.
The decision has left many employees devastated, with one former team member expressing deep sadness over losing what he described as the best job in his 20-year career. Another worker shared their disappointment in being asked to onboard their replacements from a different country, highlighting the harsh realities of capitalism.
The US Python team, which had less than 10 members, played a crucial role in maintaining the Python ecosystem at Google. Their responsibilities included managing a stable version of Python, updating third-party packages, and developing a typechecker.
This news comes on the heels of previous job cuts within Google’s real estate and finance departments. The company’s finance chief, Ruth Porat, announced plans to expand operations in Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin as part of a restructuring effort.
In January, Google also laid off hundreds of employees across various teams as it focuses on investing in artificial intelligence offerings. The tech giant continues to make strategic decisions to streamline operations and remain competitive in the ever-evolving tech industry.
