Google is making a significant change to its popular messaging app, Google Messages, with a redesign of the compose window. The update, currently rolling out in beta testing, brings back the familiar single-line text field that many users have been clamoring for.
The previous design, which featured a two-line layout introduced in December 2023, separated the emoji and attachment buttons from the main text field. This created a visual gap that some users found disruptive to the flow of conversation. User feedback played a crucial role in Google’s decision to revert to the single-line format.
“We’re always striving to improve the user experience in Google Messages,” a Google spokesperson stated. “We listened to user feedback and understand that some users preferred the previous single-line layout. We’re happy to bring that format back for those who find it more convenient.”
The new update not only reintroduces the single-line text field but also improves visual consistency by merging the emoji and attachment buttons with the text input area. This change eliminates the empty space between the text field and the buttons, creating a cleaner and more streamlined interface.
Despite the redesign, all core functionalities of Google Messages remain unchanged, ensuring users can still send text messages, photos, videos, and other media content. The app also continues to prioritize accessibility features for users with visual impairments.
The return of the single-line text field is expected to be well-received by many Google Messages users who found the two-line layout cumbersome. This update showcases Google’s commitment to user feedback and its dedication to refining the messaging experience.
