Government Implements Measures to Address Summer Electricity Demand in Business Sector

The Indian government has taken proactive measures to meet the high demand for electricity during the upcoming summer months. In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Power revealed that gas-based power plants across the country will be operationalized to ensure maximum power generation.

R K Singh, Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, chaired meetings emphasizing the need for adequate power availability during the hot weather. The government aims to optimize the utilization of Gas-Based Generating Stations (GBSs) that have been underutilized due to commercial reasons.

To bolster power availability from gas-based facilities, the government has directed GBSs with Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to prioritize offering their power to PPA holders. Any surplus power will be directed to the power market for distribution. Gas-based generating stations without PPAs are mandated to offer their generation in the power market.

Additionally, a high-level committee has been constituted to implement these directives, ensuring effective power distribution during the high-demand period from May 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. This move comes as India’s electricity demand continues to rise, driven by economic growth and the impending hot weather season.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal maximum temperatures across the country during the summer, with areas like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and North Karnataka being the most prone to heatwaves. The government’s proactive measures aim to address the increased demand for electricity and ensure uninterrupted power supply during the upcoming hot weather season.
