The Higher Education Department in Bhubaneswar has taken a significant step to address the issue of degree colleges experiencing zero admissions in certain subjects. In a letter issued on Friday, the Regional Directorate of Education (RDE) expressed concern over the impact of this trend on the quality and viability of higher education.
Three colleges in Khurda, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal districts have been issued show-cause notices for reporting zero admissions in the last two years. The colleges have been asked to explain why they should not be closed for admissions in the upcoming academic session 2024-25 under the Student Academic Management System (SAMS).
Additionally, RDE Sambalpur has issued notices to 23 colleges reporting zero admissions in certain subjects. These colleges are spread across various districts, including Sundargarh, Balangir, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Nuapada.
Government colleges such as Govt Women’s College in Titilagarh, Sushilabati Govt Women’s College in Rourkela, Govt Autonomous College in Rourkela, and Govt Women’s College in Sundargarh are also among those facing the issue of zero admissions.
The Higher Education Department has directed an inquiry into the matter and has asked the colleges to provide a comprehensive report within seven days. Further steps will be taken based on the information gathered, and colleges that continue to report zero admissions may face closure.
This proactive approach by the Higher Education Department aims to address the issue of declining admissions in certain subjects and ensure the sustainability of higher education institutions in the state.
