The Government of Uganda, in collaboration with the private sector, is set to launch the Kampala City Marathon, a ten-year project aimed at showcasing the country’s cultural, economic, and natural beauty. Scheduled for December 2024, the marathon will feature races of varying lengths, including a full marathon, half marathon, and 5km race, with the events expected to attract over 65,000 participants over the course of a decade.
Minister of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, highlighted the importance of the marathon in promoting physical activity as a means to prevent non-communicable diseases, while also positioning Uganda as a top tourist destination in Africa. The event will be organized in partnership with Golazo, a company with experience in hosting international marathons in cities like Berlin and Nairobi.
In addition to the races, the marathon will include entertainment along the course, a cultural festival, and a Hall of Fame to celebrate the participants. The government has committed to fully funding the event, with President Yoweri Museveni emphasizing the importance of physical well-being for all Ugandans.
As the marathon aims to become a sustainable event through private sector contributions, Minister Ogwang called on all Ugandans to participate and support the initiative. With the potential to boost tourism, showcase local businesses, and promote a healthy lifestyle, the Kampala City Marathon is poised to become a flagship event for Uganda in the years to come.
