Government urged to provide funding for training programs for tour operators and travel agencies overseas

Stakeholders in the tourism industry are calling on the Uganda Tourist Board (UTB) to provide training and exposure opportunities abroad for operators of tour and travel agencies, particularly those in upcountry areas. Busoga Kingdom tourism minister Hellen Namutamba emphasized the importance of such opportunities, stating that they would help operators gain knowledge, skills, and marketing strategies to benefit the sector and the government as a whole.

Speaking at a meeting of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) in Jinja city, Namutamba highlighted the need for all industry players to be involved for optimal results. She expressed concern that while Jinja is a popular tourist destination, opportunities for growth and development are not being extended to the Busoga region and eastern Uganda.

UTB’s head of quality assurance, Godfrey Okumu, clarified that licensing for Uganda tour operators is free as long as applicants fulfill their obligations as outlined by AUTO. He also mentioned that various opportunities, including financial assistance and travel abroad, are available to legitimate AUTO members online.

AUTO CEO Matilda Iremera noted that members stand to benefit from financial assistance, tax exemptions, and travel opportunities. The meeting, attended by key figures such as UWA head of reservation Leslie Muhindo and Uganda Tourism Police officer Brooks Atuhairwe, discussed the growth of domestic tourism in recent years, with an increase in both visitors and trips, resulting in significant expenditure in the sector.
