Governor of Wisconsin vetoes bill prohibiting males from participating in girls’ sports

In a controversial move, Democrat Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has vetoed a bill that would have prohibited men who identify as women from participating in scholastic sports designated for girls. The measure, known as Assembly Bill 377, was passed by the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature and presented to Evers last week.

Evers defended his decision, stating that such legislation and the harmful rhetoric surrounding it would negatively impact LGBTQ Wisconsinites, especially children. He emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

The American Principles Project, a conservative group that supported the bill, criticized Evers’ veto, calling it a “cowardly surrender to extremist ideologues.” They argued that protecting female athletes from unfair competition is essential and vowed to continue advocating for similar measures in the future.

Introduced in August 2023, AB 377 aimed to prevent individuals assigned male at birth from participating in girls’ sports, defining sex as determined at birth by a physician. While some states have passed similar laws, others have faced legal challenges over concerns of discrimination against transgender individuals.
