The Women’s Intersport Network in Columbia is making waves with their new grant initiative, Together We Win, aimed at supporting young girls in sports. With the rising costs of participation in youth sports, WIN Columbia is stepping in to provide financial assistance to girls in 8th grade or below who wish to participate in local sports.

According to WIN Columbia’s board president Mitzi Clayton, the high costs associated with competitive leagues often lead to young girls dropping out of sports. To combat this trend, WIN Columbia is offering $500 per child each funding cycle, starting April 1 through March 31, for girls who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

A recent study by the Aspen Institute revealed that it costs an average of $935 for a child to play a sport in 2022, with some sports costing over $1,000 annually. These expenses can add up for families, especially low-income households, leading to a higher likelihood of kids quitting sports due to financial constraints.

Clayton emphasized the importance of providing support to young girls in sports to build their confidence and skills for high school participation. With limited spots available and $5,000 allotted for grants, WIN Columbia hopes to make a significant impact on the community by enabling more girls to pursue their athletic dreams.
