The small town of Granum was rocked by a shocking incident on May 3rd when thieves attempted to rob JP’s Petro and General Store, causing a massive gasoline spill that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
Barin Beresford, the owner of the store, arrived at work early in the morning to find gasoline flooding the parking lot and flowing across the road. His quick thinking and decisive actions prevented a potential disaster as he shut off the filling station valve and called 9-1-1.
The thieves had tried to siphon gas from large tanks next to the store but failed, leading them to jam a hose into the filling station and let the gas flow freely. The resulting damage not only affected the Beresford’s property but also the land across the street, belonging to the municipal district.
The cost of cleanup and repairs could potentially force the Beresfords to close their family-owned store, which has been a staple in the community for nearly two decades. Despite the devastating impact, the Beresfords are grateful that no one was injured during the incident.
In a heartwarming display of support, the community has rallied together to organize a fundraising event to help the Beresfords cover the costs of the damage. The Granum and District Canada Day Society will host a benefit auction on July 1st, with all proceeds going towards the repairs.
Roy Penniket, the auction coordinator, emphasized the importance of the Beresfords and their store to the community, stating that they have been integral to every group and function in Granum. The outpouring of support from the community has left the Beresfords overwhelmed and grateful.
The auction, set to take place at the Homesteader, promises to be a significant event, with all members of the public invited to attend. Cash donations and items for the auction can be sent to friendsofjps2024@gmail.com, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to further support the Beresfords.
As the investigation into the attempted robbery continues, the community remains united in their support for the Beresfords and their store, showcasing the true spirit of solidarity in times of adversity.
