The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team defied expectations this season, claiming their third straight section championship under the leadership of head coach Daren Gravley. Despite losing key players from their state championship-winning team last year, the Knights rallied late in the season to finish with a record of 24-9 and secure another section title.
Coach Gravley, who was named the Independent’s 2023-24 Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, praised his team for their resilience and ability to adapt to changes in their playing style. The Knights faced tough competition early in the season, including a rematch against the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks, but they persevered and made adjustments that ultimately led to their success.
One significant change was the shift from zone to man defense, which improved the team’s consistency and performance on the court. The Knights also focused on their defensive efforts, holding opponents to under 70 points in 11 of their final 12 games. This dedication to defense, along with improved communication and rebounding, contributed to their late-season winning streak.
Despite facing challenges and graduating several key seniors, including Drew Werkman, Blake Christianson, and Carson Gylling, the Knights are confident in their ability to continue their success under Coach Gravley’s guidance. With a strong foundation of teamwork, trust, and chemistry, the team looks forward to the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.
