Green Finance Institute introduces new green mortgage training programme

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Green Finance Institute (GFI) has unveiled a groundbreaking training programme and qualification aimed at boosting the green mortgage industry. The ‘GFI Certificate in Green Mortgages’ is the first of its kind, offering mortgage professionals the knowledge and skills needed to define and sell green mortgage products.

Green mortgages, which offer incentives to homeowners who invest in clean technologies and energy efficiency improvements, are gaining traction among banks and building societies. However, a knowledge gap among customers, intermediaries, and brokers is hindering the market’s growth. Research by the GFI found that 83% of mortgage advisers reported their clients had no understanding of green mortgages.

In response to this challenge, the GFI has partnered with the London Institute of Banking and Finance (LIBF) to offer accredited training sessions. The programme aims to equip brokers with the information and skills necessary to guide customers through the process of financing green home upgrades.

Rachael Hunnisett, associate director for built environment at the GFI, emphasized the importance of decarbonizing UK properties in the transition to a net-zero economy. She highlighted the role of the new training programme in helping brokers support customers in investing in energy efficiency improvements.

The launch of the ‘GFI Certificate in Green Mortgages’ follows the success of the GFI’s Broker’s Handbook and the Green Home Finance Principles (GHFPs). These initiatives aim to provide guidance and support for the emerging green mortgage market, ensuring that brokers are well-equipped to navigate this evolving landscape.
