Environmentalists in Wayanad are pushing for the implementation of an e-pass system similar to Ooty and Kodaikanal to regulate tourist inflow. Following a High Court order in Tamil Nadu, the state government has taken steps to control the number of tourists visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal through an e-pass system. The move aims to reduce the ecological impact of excessive footfalls at these popular hill destinations.
Inspired by this development, the Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithy has urged the Chief Minister and District Collector to introduce an e-pass system in Wayanad as well. The organization highlighted the need for an expert panel to assess the environmental pressure caused by the high number of tourists visiting the district, which is almost double the local population.
WPSS president N Badusha warned of exploring legal options if the government fails to address the issues arising from the tourist influx. While some tourist spots in Wayanad have already implemented advanced booking systems, the tourism industry is concerned about the potential impact of further restrictions on tourist numbers.
Wayanad Tourism Organization secretary CP Sailesh emphasized the importance of the tourism industry for the livelihoods of over 60,000 residents in the district. He suggested alternative road construction and long-term solutions for issues like drought and water scarcity to manage tourist traffic effectively. The debate between environmentalists and tourism stakeholders continues as both sides seek to find a balance between conservation and economic interests in Wayanad.
