Climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained by police in the Netherlands after participating in a protest that partially blocked a road in The Hague. The 21-year-old was among dozens of people held by authorities, but after being released, she quickly rejoined a small group of demonstrators blocking a different road leading to a railway station. However, she was detained a second time and driven off in a police van.

Ms. Thunberg told journalists that she was protesting because the world is facing an existential crisis and that action needs to be taken to prevent further harm to the planet. The demonstrators were protesting against Dutch subsidies and tax breaks given to companies linked to the fossil fuel industry.

This is not the first time Ms. Thunberg has been involved in such protests. In February, she was acquitted by a London court for refusing to follow a police order to leave a protest blocking the entrance to a major oil and gas industry conference.

Her activism has inspired a global youth movement demanding stronger efforts to fight climate change since she began staging weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament in 2018. Despite facing fines in Sweden and the UK for civil disobedience, Ms. Thunberg remains committed to raising awareness about the urgent need for climate action.
