The New Ulm Cathedral softball team has emerged victorious in the Class A State Softball Tournament Championship, defeating Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 10-4 in a thrilling game at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Despite facing early challenges and setbacks, the Greyhounds displayed resilience and determination throughout the tournament, ultimately claiming the title.

Head coach Jamie Kuehn praised his team’s resiliency, highlighting their ability to bounce back from adversity and never give up. The team’s success can be attributed to the outstanding performances of players like Abbey Hillesheim and Jayde Altermatt, who stepped up in the absence of the starting pitcher due to injury.

Hillesheim, a sophomore, made significant contributions from the plate, hitting two home runs in the tournament, including a crucial three-run homer in the championship game. Altermatt, a seventh-grader, excelled in the pitching role, securing all three wins for Cathedral during their title run.

The victory was a culmination of hard work and dedication from the entire team, with players like Alexa Hornick, Kiah Helget, and Jenna Hotovec making key contributions on their journey to becoming state champions. The team’s strong bond and chemistry were evident throughout the season, leading to their success on the field.

With this win, Cathedral adds an eighth state title to their impressive record, solidifying their legacy as one of the top softball programs in Class A. The players expressed their gratitude and pride in achieving this milestone, reflecting on the hard work and sacrifices that led to their success.

As the Greyhounds celebrate their championship victory, they look forward to continuing their winning tradition and building on the foundation of teamwork and determination that brought them to the top. Congratulations to the New Ulm Cathedral softball team on their well-deserved triumph in the state tournament.
