Growing China-Russia Military Cooperation Raises Concerns for Taiwan, US Intelligence Warns

In a recent congressional hearing, US intelligence officials sounded the alarm on the growing military cooperation between China and Russia, particularly in relation to Taiwan. Lt Gen. Jeffrey Kruse, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, warned that if the US were to engage in conflict with one of these nations, there is a high likelihood of facing a second front due to their alliance.

The alliance between China and Russia, which was solidified just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has seen unprecedented levels of cooperation. China has benefited from cheaper natural resources from Russia, while increased bilateral commerce has helped support Russia’s economy amidst severe sanctions.

Despite claiming to remain impartial in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, China has been filtering social media posts critical of Moscow’s actions. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines highlighted the joint military exercises between China and Russia in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, emphasizing China’s desire for Russian support in the Taiwan issue.

China’s claim on Taiwan as its territory, despite never holding power there, has been a point of contention. The two nations have conducted multiple military exercises together, raising concerns about their intentions. Additionally, accusations from Ukraine suggest that Chinese companies are supplying drones and components to Russian forces, leading to sanctions from Washington.

The increased military cooperation between China and Russia poses a significant challenge for US defense planning, as the potential for a two-front conflict becomes more likely. As tensions continue to rise in the region, the implications of this alliance on global security remain a critical concern.
