Prominent Angolan journalist William Tonet is facing a series of challenges that have put his safety and freedom at risk. A break-in at his home in Luanda, where an armed man entered his bedroom in the early hours of the morning, has raised concerns about his safety. Tonet, the director of Folha 8 newspaper, managed to scare off the intruder, who fled in a waiting vehicle.
This incident comes on the heels of a fire that destroyed the Folha 8 office last year, resulting in the loss of valuable equipment. Additionally, Tonet is facing criminal defamation and insult charges over a report published in 2020, which could lead to imprisonment under Angolan penal code.
Despite these challenges, Tonet remains resilient in his pursuit of journalistic integrity. He has expressed distrust in the authorities and their handling of previous incidents, including the recent break-in. The lack of a police complaint from Tonet underscores the precarious situation journalists face in Angola.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for a credible investigation into the break-in and urged authorities to drop the charges against Tonet. The case highlights the ongoing threats faced by critical journalists in Angola and the need for a safe environment for media professionals to operate without fear of legal persecution.
