A Hamas spokesman, Abu Ubaida, stated that their fighters successfully “lured” a contingent of Israeli soldiers into a tunnel in Jabalia on Saturday and ambushed them. He further added that the fighters withdrew after leaving the Israeli soldiers dead, wounded, and captured. The spokesman did not provide any evidence or specify the number of soldiers abducted.

A video released by Hamas shows a bloodied person being dragged along the ground in a tunnel, along with photos of military fatigue and a rifle. The authenticity of the video and the identity of the person could not be immediately verified.

On the other hand, the Israeli military has refuted the Hamas claim, stating, “The IDF clarifies that there is no incident in which a soldier was abducted.” This conflicting information has added to the tension and uncertainty in the region.

The capture of Israeli soldiers by Hamas comes at a critical time, as reports emerged that ceasefire talks could be resuming. A decision was reportedly made to resume negotiations next week after a meeting between the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, the chief of the CIA, and the prime minister of Qatar.

However, a Hamas official denied Israeli media reports that the talks would resume in Cairo on Tuesday, stating, “There is no date.” The mediators, Egypt and Qatar, have been struggling to reach a ceasefire deal, with Israel seeking the release of hostages held by Hamas and the Palestinian group demanding an end to the war and the release of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

Amidst these developments, nearly 200 aid trucks are expected to enter Gaza via the Karem Abu Salem crossing today. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been dire, with food aid rotting in the summer heat due to the closure of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt by the Israeli military.
