The Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, is mourning the loss of three of his sons and at least two grandchildren after they were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip. The tragic incident occurred while the family was visiting relatives for Eid at the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Haniyeh, who is currently based in Doha, Qatar, expressed his grief in an interview with Al Jazeera, stating that his children Hazem, Amir, and Mohammed, along with several of their children, were among the casualties of the airstrike. This devastating loss adds to the toll of 60 relatives who have been killed during the six-month-old war, including 14 who died in a previous airstrike on the family home in Gaza City.

Despite the personal tragedy, Haniyeh remains steadfast in his commitment to seeking a permanent ceasefire and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes. The Israeli military confirmed that the strike targeted Haniyeh’s sons, whom they described as “Hamas operatives” on their way to carry out terrorist activities.

The news comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with US President Joe Biden calling for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid access to Gaza. The conflict has already claimed the lives of thousands and displaced millions, with fears of a regional conflict looming large.

As the world watches the situation unfold, the hope for peace and resolution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains uncertain. The tragic loss of Haniyeh’s family members serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis.
