Hamas unleashes massive rocket assault from Rafah in most significant strike on Israel in recent months

Air-raid sirens blared in Tel Aviv for the first time in four months as Hamas launched a massive rocket barrage from its stronghold in Rafah on Sunday. The attack, which Hamas claimed included over 100 missiles, showcases the group’s resilience as the conflict nears its eighth month.

Israeli officials view the rocket barrage as a clear indication that a military invasion of southern Gaza is necessary to eliminate Hamas’ threat, despite objections from the Biden Administration and the International Criminal Court.

Hamas’ military wing, al-Qassam Brigades, stated that the attack was in response to alleged “Zionist massacres against civilians.” While no casualties or damage were reported from the rocket strike, it marked the first long-range missile assault from Gaza since January.

The Israeli Defense Forces intercepted a number of rockets, but the attack triggered alarms in various communities, including Herzliya, Kfar Shmaryahu, and Petah Tikva. One rocket hit a vehicle near the Gaza border.

Benny Gantz, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet, emphasized the need for continued IDF operations in Rafah to combat Hamas’ terror capabilities. Gantz labeled Hamas as war criminals and vowed to hold them accountable for their actions.

As the conflict approaches its eighth month, Israel remains steadfast in its goal to secure the release of hostages and eliminate the threat posed by Gaza. The ongoing war has resulted in over 1,200 deaths and approximately 250 kidnappings since October 7. Protests erupted in Israel over the weekend, underscoring the public’s demand for action and resolution in the conflict.
