Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized for Tests After Return to NYC
Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized for a battery of tests after his return to New York City following an appeals court ruling nullifying his 2020 rape conviction. Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated that Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday to city jails.
Aidala expressed concern for Weinstein’s health, stating, “It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. He’s got a lot of problems. He’s getting all kinds of tests. He’s somewhat of a train wreck health wise.”
The New York Court of Appeals vacated Weinstein’s conviction on Thursday, citing that jurors were exposed to evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. The court also erased his 23-year prison sentence and ordered a retrial. Prosecutors intend to retry him on charges of forcibly performing oral sex on a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and raping an aspiring actor in 2013.
Weinstein, who was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and sentenced to 16 years in prison, remains in custody at Bellevue. Aidala mentioned that Weinstein has been suffering from various health issues, including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems.
Despite his physical ailments, Aidala noted that Weinstein is mentally sharp. He criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer, claiming that officials refused to provide him with water, food, or a bathroom break.
Weinstein’s lawyer plans to request a retrial after Labor Day when Weinstein appears in court on Wednesday in Manhattan. The 72-year-old is expected to undergo further tests at Bellevue before being returned to the Rikers Island jail complex.
