Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is currently in a Manhattan hospital awaiting a rape retrial after his 2020 conviction was overturned. The 72-year-old former Hollywood elite is said to be a ‘sickly old man’ according to his lawyer, Arthur Aidala.
Weinstein has been battling a number of health issues, including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye problems. His health has deteriorated while incarcerated, with the lawyer describing him as “somewhat of a train wreck health-wise.”
Despite his health struggles, Weinstein is still set to return to court for his retrial. He was first arrested on rape and sexual offence charges in 2018, leading to a 2020 conviction and a 23-year prison sentence. However, one of the rape convictions was overturned, and he still faces another conviction from 2022.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has announced a court date for Weinstein’s retrial in May, stating their commitment to retry the case and support survivors of sexual assault. Prosecutors intend to press charges again, alleging that Weinstein forcibly performed a sex act on a production assistant in 2006 and raped an aspiring actor in 2013.
Weinstein’s 2020 conviction was overturned due to the admission of “prior bad acts” testimony in the original trial. A retrial is necessary for him to be convicted again, and prosecutors are determined to see justice served. Despite his health challenges, Weinstein’s legal battles continue as he faces the possibility of further imprisonment.
