Alex Giroux shines in relief as Hawaii baseball team wins back-to-back extra-inning games
In a thrilling weekend series against UC Davis, the Hawaii baseball team came out on top in back-to-back extra-inning games, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of pitcher Alex Giroux.
After a strong outing from Harrison Bodendorf in the 10th-inning win on Saturday, Giroux stepped up on Sunday to secure a 4-3 victory for the Rainbow Warriors. Giroux, who struggled in his previous start, redeemed himself with three innings of shutout relief, allowing just two hits, no walks, and striking out five batters to earn the win.
Despite struggling with runners in scoring position throughout the series finale, Hawaii managed to come through in the 10th inning. Kyson Donahue and Ben Zeigler-Namoa set the stage with a walk and a single, respectively, before Dallas Duarte drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Leadoff man Jordan Donahue also contributed to the win with a 3-for-5 performance, including an RBI double in the fifth inning. Although UC Davis fought back with solo home runs, the Rainbow Warriors held on for the win.
This victory marked the first time since 2010 that Hawaii won consecutive games in extra innings, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination. With a mid-week game against Santa Clara on the horizon, the Rainbow Warriors look to carry their momentum into the upcoming series against UC Santa Barbara.
