Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Hawaii baseball team put on a show in a 13-1 victory over Hawaii Hilo, utilizing all 17 of its position players and showcasing its depth in both the lineup and bullpen. Head coach Rich Hill took advantage of the opportunity to give playing time to players who don’t always see the field, including first-time batter Itsuki Takemoto.

Regular starters like Kyson Donahue, Austin Machado, and Jake Tsukada put up impressive numbers, while part-time starter Sean Rimmer hit his third home run of the season. Pitcher Cory Ronan started the game and was followed by seven relievers who combined to allow just three hits.

With the win, Hawaii improved to 26-15 on the season and is on a five-game winning streak heading into a crucial series against Big West co-leader Cal State Northridge. Coach Hill is hopeful for a packed stadium for the series opener on Friday.

Freshman Itsuki Takemoto, who is known for his pitching, made his debut as a pinch hitter and later as a designated hitter, showcasing his skills at the plate. Coach Hill sees potential in Takemoto and is eager to give him more opportunities to develop his hitting abilities.

The victory over Hawaii Hilo improved Hawaii’s record to 4-0 against Division II competition this season. The team is closing in on its first 30-win season since 2012, which would be a significant achievement under Coach Hill’s leadership.
