Head of PA Game Commission resigns following disclosure of ‘business relationships’

Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Bryan Burhans has resigned from his position after it was discovered that he was moonlighting as a wellness coach and had a “business relationship” with several commission workers. The Board of Game Commissioners raised concerns about Burhans’ business relationships, prompting his resignation.

Replacing Burhans is Pennsylvania native Stephen Smith, who has been with the commission since 2008 and has served as the deputy executive director since February. Smith has announced plans for an independent third-party review of the commission’s supplement employment policies in light of the recent events.

Burhans was working as a wellness coach through Optavia, a health and wellness community that offers a diet program paired with coaching services. Despite the controversy surrounding his business relationships, Burhans has received media attention for his personal weight loss journey and advocacy for healthy eating habits.

Legislators have been critical of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s management, particularly in regards to lobbying activities. The commission hired a $10,000 per-month lobbyist, which raised concerns among lawmakers.

While Burhans’ resignation may not satisfy all legislators, it is seen as a step towards reforming the Game Commission. Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill hopes that this move will lead to overdue reforms within the agency to uphold and build upon the state’s hunting traditions.
