Head of Restaurant Association Urges Immediate Action to Ensure Safety of Workers and Customers in Winnipeg

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Manitoba Restaurant and Foodservices Association is expressing frustration over the slow pace of implementing safety measures in restaurants across the city. Shaun Jeffrey, the head of the association, has been in talks with Winnipeg’s mayor and Manitoba’s justice minister but feels that progress is lacking.

Jeffrey highlighted the financial strain on the industry, stating that restaurants are still recovering from the pandemic and cannot afford the costly security systems being proposed. He emphasized the need for short-term relief to address the immediate safety concerns faced by restaurant owners and employees.

The recent temporary closure of the Osborne Street Starbucks due to crime concerns further underscores the urgency of the situation. Jeffrey stressed that the safety situation for restaurant members is deteriorating and action needs to be taken swiftly.

In response, Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham assured that efforts are being made to enhance safety in the community. He mentioned ongoing discussions with Jeffrey and a commitment to collaborate with frontline groups to address safety issues effectively.

Jeffrey’s organization is seeking government support to connect with experts and implement necessary safety measures promptly. The call is for a coordinated effort to ensure the safety of patrons and employees in restaurants across the city.
