Here’s Why Some WNBA Draft Picks May Not Make Their Team’s Roster

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The WNBA draft has come to a close, with standout players like No. 1 pick Caitlin Clark poised for successful professional careers. However, not all 36 draft selections are guaranteed spots on team rosters, highlighting the challenges faced by aspiring women’s basketball players.

With only 144 coveted roster spots spread across 12 teams in the WNBA, competition is fierce and opportunities for pro careers in women’s basketball are limited compared to the men’s game. Unlike the NBA, which has 30 teams with 15 players on each roster, the WNBA offers fewer spots for players to secure.

The main reason why not all WNBA draft picks make team rosters is due to the presence of returning players who occupy most of the roster spots. Only a fraction of draft picks from previous years have gone on to play in the WNBA, with the majority of players finding it challenging to secure a spot in the league.

Despite the high expectations surrounding top college stars like Caitlin Clark, success in the WNBA is not guaranteed. Many talented players from the NCAA may not make it onto a WNBA roster, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.

Overall, the limited opportunities in the WNBA pose a challenge for aspiring women’s basketball players, who must compete not only with current roster players but also with talented athletes from overseas leagues. The road to a successful WNBA career is tough, but for those who make it, the rewards are immense.
