Riverhead Blue Waves and Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats are off to a strong start in their high school sports games this season. In boys lacrosse, the Riverhead Blue Waves secured a crucial win against Middle Country with a score of 11-4. Led by standout performances from Zach Maligres, Griffin Sumwalt, and Logan Dempsey, the Blue Waves are now 4-1 and aiming for their first playoff berth since 2019.
On the baseball field, the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats continued their winning streak by defeating Southampton 6-0. Pitcher Gordon Votruba delivered a dominant performance, striking out six batters and allowing only two hits in five innings. With key contributions from Christian Cox and Kyle Stella at the plate, the Wildcats are now 4-0 in League VII and have scored 29 runs while only giving up eight in four games.
In girls lacrosse, the Riverhead Blue Waves faced a tough loss against Huntington, marking their fourth consecutive defeat to start the season. Despite scoring goals, the Blue Waves have struggled defensively, giving up 15 goals in three of their four games. Logan Pilon and Sadie Shultz showed promise on offense, but the team is looking to turn things around in upcoming matches.
Both boys tennis teams from Riverhead and Shoreham-Wading River also started their seasons strong with victories.
